Tyrone were crowned All-Ireland Ladies Intermediate champions following a mighty performance at Croke Park, where they rose magnificently to the occasion to overcome Laois.

A glorious afternoon at GAA Headquarters saw the Red Hands turn on the style on their way to a memorable victory that brought out the best in a talented group of footballers.

The six points winning margin could have been greater had they converted a couple more of the many goal chances they created, but it was nevertheless comfortable in the end as they atoned for defeat in last year’s decider, and claimed the Mary Quinn Memorial Cup for the first time since 2018, and at the first attempt for manager Darren McCann.

“We were in the same place last year but unfortunately we were on the losing side, and we knew it was going to take a lot to get back here, but we were willing and determined as team to get back here and show what we’re actually capable of doing,” said player of the match Sorcha Gormley.

“And thankfully today, we put on a performance and got out on the winning side.

“This is why we all play football, it’s what you dream to do, and to do it in Croke Park is just something special.”
And top scorer Niamh O’Neill, who watched last year’s final on television from Melbourne, added: “It’s an amazing group, this is what we wanted and we got it.

“We missed a bagful, but when you miss you just have to get over it and move in, and we had loads of time left.

“It would have been nice to hit the net, but all that matters is the score-line in the end.”
