Parents and staff at St Mary’s Primary School in Fivemiletown are renewing calls for the speed limit outside the school to be cut, saying current traffic levels pose a daily threat to pupils’ safety.
Their appeal follows a decision by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), which recently rejected the school’s request for traffic-calming measures and a 20mph limit.
The department said its policy prioritises rural schools situated on national-speed-limit roads. Because St Mary’s sits within a 30mph zone, although a 40mph stretch begins only a short distance away, it does not qualify under those criteria.
Another primary school on the same A4 route, less than a mile away, had its application approved over the summer, leaving many at St Mary’s perplexed.
Mairaid Kelly, a parent and school governor, said she fears the current traffic speeds could lead to tragedy.
