There was an unprecedented turnout at the Hill of The O’Neill for Echoes from the Barley Field: Dungannon Workhouse – History & Memory, with people not only filling the venue but joining online from England, Scotland, America, Canada and Australia.

The shared interest in the history of workhouses is clearly stronger than ever.

Chair of Donaghmore Historical Society, Mary MacGinty, opened the event by welcoming a strong cross-community audience and acknowledging the generations who kept the Workhouse story alive.

She warmly welcomed Cllr Frances Burton, Chair of Mid-Ulster District Council, who addressed the audience, reflecting on the importance of preserving local heritage.
