On the 3rd May 1912 it was proposed to start a flute band in the Bush area of Dungannon. The original name of the band was Bush True Blues until the end of the Second World War, when the name was changed to the Sgt. White Memorial Flute Band, in memory of a local man, Sgt. Robert G. (Bertie) White, who was killed in action at the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944.
Sgt. White is buried in Arnhem Oosterbeek Cemetery in The Netherlands. Indeed, the band still contains a link to Sgt. White, with several of his relations as currently active band members.
This year a party of 66 band members, family and friends travelled to Oosterbeek to take part in this commemorative walk on Saturday 6th September.
