A public talk is being held at Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House on Monday 10 November at 8pm.
The story of the Dungannon Workhouse reaches far beyond the town itself touching families from Donaghmore, Coalisland, Pomeroy, Brantry, The Moy, Benburb and right across Mid-Ulster.
Now, the lives of more than 4,000 men, women and children who lived and died there will be remembered in a special talk, “Echoes from the Barley Field: Dungannon Workhouse – History and Memory”, hosted by Donaghmore Historical Society at the Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House.
The event will be led by Dr Ciarán Reilly (Maynooth University / RTÉ’s The Great Famine), whose research uncovers the human stories of those buried in the so-called “Barley Field” These were people of all faiths and none, united by poverty, endurance and quiet courage.
Chair Mary MacGinty said:
“This isn’t just Dungannon’s story it belongs to every parish and family in Mid-Ulster. People from as far away as Australia, America and Canada have contacted us, but it’s our local communities who now have the chance to remember and honour those who went before.”
Local representatives and community leaders will be in attendance. Everyone is encouraged to come along for the talk. Tea and biscuits will be available at the venue.
